Rod Hutchinson returned from France mid-May with a record catch and after 46 years as one of the world’s top carp anglers, a new personal best. The trip to Luke Moffat’s exclusive ‘Les Graviers’ lakes near Dijon was to shoot Rod’s first solo DVD on carp angling with Bath-based Hit the Nail productions. Rod has an international reputation as a best-selling author of books about carp fishing – his recently re-printed “The Carp Strikes Back” has sold over 40,000 copies in 15 countries.

This year, Rod’s publishing career takes a new turn with the release of his first solo DVD. “The weather conditions were pretty good for catching carp – not great for anglers though; at my age I like a bit of sun here and there.” quips Rod, “This lake’s got some really big fish – the world record carp came out of here 2 years ago. I’m not obsessed with personal bests, but there’s always the chance you’re going to pull a big one out of Les Graviers – maybe your new PB or even the world beater, so it’s always there at the back of your mind when you hear those alarms screaming.”

“As the week progressed, the combination of weather conditions was driving the fish down the lake towards us. At this time of year, I knew we could expect a few big males drifting in to prepare for spawning, so we set up to intercept them.”
